2022 EDUTech Europe

On 5 October 2022, I attended the EDUTech Europe event at RAI Amsterdam.

I was fortunate to receive an invitation from an internship student I am supervising, though had also had this event on my radar for some time as my own Master’s thesis focussed on EdTech.

Panels and Presentations

With a full agenda, it was difficult to choose which sessions to attend. These are the ones I decided on:

Panel: Leadership towards the university of the future

This session covered:

  • Developing digital fluency in leadership
  • Building on current foundations to foster an innovative digital culture within universities
  • Digital faculty for a digital future

The panel included:

  • Moderator Tawhid Chtioui, President aivancity Paris-Cachan, the Grande Cole of AI & Data
  • Dr Ianis G. Matsoukas, Executive Director, Global University Hub, Metropolitan College
  • Prof Dr Ada Perlett, Fern Universitait Hagen
  • Ellen van Schoten, VP Erasmus

Just a few of my own notes:

  • The future belongs to intelligent collaboration – this is hard, but rewarding
  • Bringing knowledge to students is not about tech, it’s rethinking learning
  • National learning policy is important
  • Critical thinking and reflection are skills to take seriously but so is creativity
  • A network of institutions is the future of personalised learning
  • Stop separation – the world is connected

Panel: Are you OK? Protecting student and teacher wellbeing

This session covered:

  • Cultivating a wellbeing culture for students, parents and teachers in the digital age
  • Nurturing an environment of openness, communication and empathy
  • Retaining and motivating staff
  • Balancing between striving for academic excellence and emotional welling resilience

The panel included:

  • Moderator Iain Henderson
  • Rynette de Villiers, Principal, Amsterdam International Community School
  • Peter Dickinson, School Director, St George’s The British International School
  • Sarah Wade, Principal, Amity International School Amsterdam
  • Wayne Johnson, Head of School, International School of Belgium

My own notes:

  • Tech can be damaging but “getting it out of their hands” is not going to work, you need to balance the virtual and real world
  • You need to have real authentic interest in staff and students
  • Don’t dictate or micromanage, things will fail, experiment, work it out, encourage risk
  • Trust people and get out of their way

Panel: New Skills Agenda for Europe: The essential role of Universities
