10 things I have learned as a new university lecturer

Two years ago, I gave my first class at The Hague University of Applied Sciences.  Here’s 10 things I’ve learned as a new university lecturer.

1. You will rarely get – and hold attention – of the entire class.

2.  Keep asking questions

3.  It’s difficult – but necessary – to remain as objective as possible

4.  Some moments will make it all worth it

5.  It takes a lot of energy

6. Have back up plans

7. Students will not necessarily understand – or let you know this

8.  Systems take time to learn

9.  Mix and match teaching tools and methods

10.  You will learn more than you teach
