On 15 May 2024, I really enjoyed delivering a networking workshop at The Hague University Toastmasters.
Thanks to for the great photos Thomas Bwire!
Labels
We always give ourselves and each other “labels” – whether we like it or not!
There are some benefits to doing this, in helping our brain process all the information we deal with every day. However being aware of this, and the limitations as well in networking is very useful. We slowed down this process, with post it notes and me as the “guinea pig” to talk about which labels we may give each other, and whether we have any influence over this.

Diversity Wheel
Taking the exercise above one step further, the diversity wheel reflects the categories of the labels we use.

Networking in the Netherlands – and other cultures
We tested out some scenarios at networking events, and how we may unconsciously exclude people from our “group”. Some simple things, like creating a more “open circle” instead of closed can make it easier for a newcomer to join your conversation and feel more included.
