Creating a Communication Canvas – Guest Lecture for InHolland Creative Business

I first discovered the Creative Business Bachelor’s Programme at InHolland last year via my daughter, as it’s her top choice to study when she finishes high school.

Then, I realised I had already crossed paths online with one of the lecturers, and via her was fortunate to meet lecturer Jonathan Evans at an event I hosted on neurodiversity. We met up to plan this session, which formed part of the year 4 Creative Business Programme – Managing of Value Creation & Marketing module: from business idea to execution.

In this module, students are working on a real life business project. They are focussing on developing the skills to create and develop a business idea that benefits a range of stakeholders, and need to test the idea, run experiments, and find out how to take it to market with the target community. By the end of the module, students are expected to be ready to offer a client detailed, well supported marketing advice.

When Jonathan and I met to discuss my Masterclass, there were a number of different angles and topics I could cover – we decided on sharing my own Communication Canvas with the students, which I have developed in the past.

We agreed that many marketing plans do not spend enough time or energy on the specifics of communication and the huge impact this can have. That was my own motivation to develop this canvas in the past, combining the concepts of a marketing persona, the Business Model Canvas and other aspects of communication which I have learned through many years now as a communication coach, consultant and lecturer.

The objectives for this session were to spark some ideas and inspiration via…

  • Sharing some of my perspectives and experiences in the field of marketing and communications
  • Zooming into the communication aspects
  • Offering and explaining one framework to capture and share aspects of communication plans and strategy

It’s always a great challenge to teach in a new environment and to students I’ve never met, but enjoyed talking briefly with a few during the exercise.
