2022 CJG Communicating with International Families

On 8 November 2022, it was a delight to have the chance to spend some time with the fabulous team at the CJG Leidschenveen-Ypenburg (Centrum voor Jeugd & Genzin). This centre supports families with babies and children up to 12 years.

They have noticed in recent years that more and more international families have settled in this area, many of whom do not (yet) speak Dutch). I have a lot of experience here not just personally but also in my role as Chairperson of Delft MaMa.

This brings with it many language and cultural challenges. The Dutch-speaking staff have varying levels of confidence with communicating in English. In this short workshop, there was not enough time to go into language, but we covered a lot of points relating to intercultural communication.

Some very interesting and valuable experiences were shared within the team, and I hope to have the chance to work with them again!
