Which Apps can you not live without?

Which apps can you not live without?

I admit it.  I’m an App Addict.  When I first got my iPhone about 4 years ago, I messaged my brother.  “Yay, finally have an iPhone”.  “Great, app it out!” he replied, along with some suggestions of his favourite apps to get started.  Immediately I added at least 10, including Facebook, Twitter, the Torch (which we both thought was pretty cool back then) and more.

Now the novelty has worn off a little, but I still browse the App Store from time to time and get really excited by “bright new shiny things” (i.e. new apps) and download lots to try.  As a social media trainer I told myself I had the excuse of needing to keep up with the latest app trends.

My now quite “old” iPhone 4 (16GB) was starting to struggle with the number of apps.  Response time was really slow and I also missed some potentially great photos recently as the camera took ages to open and operate – and I had no room left to save them anyway.  Though I regularly download photos I’ve taken onto my computer, the phone was just too full with apps – I had over 100, many of which I rarely – if ever – used.

So last night, I did a “restore factory settings”.  First I did back up my phone, but decided to just wipe the whole thing and start anew.

There are certain apps that are standard with the iPhone, most of which you can’t delete even if you want to.  Here’s my screen just after the restore and when I had just started re-arranging things:

Here are the standard apps I do use quite regularly, which will stay on my home screen:

  • Messages
  • Calendar
  • Photos
  • Camera
  • Weather
  • Clock
  • Notes
  • Reminders
  • iTunes Store
  • App Store
  • Contacts
  • FaceTime
  • Settings

There are also the four main ones which are standard on every screen:

  • Phone
  • Mail
  • Safari
  • Music

Here are the standard apps which were already in the Extras folder, or I dragged straight into there I rarely use them:

  • Calculator
  • Compass
  • Game Center
  • Stocks
  • Passbook
  • Maps (Apple version)
  • Voice Memos
  • Newstand
  • Videos

So now, I will only add apps when I feel I can’t live without them!  It sounds as if I’m app-depriving myself, but I’m actually only talking about my iPhone – I also use my MacBook Pro and iPad!  However I think it makes a different how many I am using on my iPhone….for example, I’m wondering if I really do need to check my emails on the go or can wait until I am home?
