Two decades of tech in education

This Sydney Morning Herald article from 2005 gives a snapshot of where we were two decades ago:

This article urged schools to not ban technology but to embrace it as a tool of the trade.

Interestingly enough, now 20 years later, my 16 year old daughter’s school just banned phones in school.

This came after many years of the school actually focussing on digitizing everything from locker access to timetables. So this is a complete change of culture.

I found her response quite fascinating. She dug out my old iPod to listen to music and bought a digital camcorder online to make videos with her friends.

As a parent, I really am in the middle.

There are so many pros and cons of tech, and I don’t see it going away in our lifetime. However I am concerned about the fact that after 2 decades, us “adults” still can’t make up our mind about how to or whether to integrate it.

I wonder where we will be 20 years from now?
