After several very cold days, many waterways in The Hague were frozen solid after the weekend. Advice from official authorities was that the ice may not be thick enough to support skaters. However there were still significant numbers out on the ice.
TheHagueOnLine editor, Renee Veldman-Tentori, lives in The Hague suburb of Ypenburg, where many local residents spent the afternoon on the ice.
“It was such a lovely atmosphere with neighbours out chatting on the ice and the sun shining. I saw a couple of weak spots on the ice that made me nervous but didn’t see any accidents, apart from one man who got his foot wet near the edge of one canal. After growing up in the warm climate of Australia this was a very special experience!”
