2,000 people tip off the tax office about someone else’s personal tax bill

Some 2,000 people last year got in touch with the tax office with a tip-off about a family member, neighbour or work colleague whom they suspected were fiddling their taxes, BNR radio said on Friday. The real total may be higher because the tax office does not have a formal way of registering potential abuse, the broadcaster said. The motivation for tipping off the tax office could be based on jealousy, a psychologist told the broadcaster. Revenge on an ex-partner or a work colleague could be another reason. Officials do not take action in more than half the cases and only a handful led to an extra tax bill.
