In the coming years, The Hague will invest heavily in nature. Nature will be strengthened and new nature area will be created throughout the city. For example, a large part of the former ADS sports fields at the Madestein recreation area will be turned into a nature area, contrary to earlier plans to build on the area. The municipality is also making plans for an ecoduct over the Lozerlaan. By working on nature in several places in the city, The Hague will soon have thousands of square meters of greenery.
Alderman Robert Barker (Nature): ‘Nature areas form the green heart of our city and are of great importance to both people and animals. Unfortunately, nature in the Netherlands is under great pressure. To turn the tide, we must invest in our nature. Vital urban nature ensures more biodiversity, has a cooling effect and contributes to the collection of water.’
Healthy urban nature
The Hague cannot do without healthy urban nature. Natural areas are important for the health of people and animals. Green is also indispensable to absorb the increasing consequences of climate change. Expanding and strengthening nature in The Hague is important to prepare the city for the future.
In addition to creating more nature, existing nature areas are being strengthened. ‘Green areas are connected to each other throughout the city. This network of nature is vital for animals. We are therefore not only expanding The Hague’s nature, but also strengthening it. We are increasing the quality of nature by focusing on small-scale management and realizing nature-friendly banks. We will also be purchasing as many organically grown trees as possible from now on,’ says alderman Barker.
Asphalt makes way for nature
In various places in the city, efforts are being made to expand nature. In addition to the projects at Madestein and Lozerlaan, this includes removing asphalt between Wapendal and the Bosjes van Pex. The former site of the Zenderpark Scheveningen will also be returned to the nature of the Westduinpark. All plans for expanding and strengthening The Hague’s urban nature can be found in the letter to the city council.
