SurfPoel – The Hague’s indoor wave pool closes

SurfPoel, the  indoor wave pool for surfers   in  Binckhorst, is going to close. The initiators  wrote this in an email to their  stakeholders. “With a heavy heart, we have to inform you that the prospects have become so minimal that we are forced to stop the project.”

In the email, the initiators wrote  that they have walked “a long and difficult road” to get where they are now. “We have succeeded in building the first indoor wave pool in Europe. In the past period, we have tried with great dedication to make the project a success. Unfortunately, it has become apparent that we cannot use the building where the Surf Pool was built for long enough. As a result, we do not have sufficient prospects to raise the necessary funding for further improvements to the waves and to make the Surf Pool safer and more accessible.”

“This limited time and the uncertain future have made it difficult for investors to provide further support. As a result, we can unfortunately no longer meet our payment obligations. The crowdfunders who provided a loan via the Crowdaboutnow platform have now received a message with information.”

The construction of the  SurfPoel  was financed with crowdfunding, sponsors, private investors, support from the Hague gemeente  and the efforts of volunteers from the surfing community. In December last year, the first waves rolled through the 100-meter long shed in the Binckhorst. The prototype received a lot of attention from home and abroad.
