A wonderful gift for the 120th anniversary of the Residentie Orkest The Hague: a Steinway-D grand piano. The new instrument will be symbolically handed over at the anniversary concert on Friday 22 November, when top Spanish pianist Javier Perianes will perform Schumann’s romantic Piano Concerto as a soloist.
The Residentie Orkest is celebrating its 120th anniversary in November. Back in 1904, its first conductor and founder, Henri Viotta, believed in the impact of classical music on society and the need for an exceptional orchestra in The Hague. Since then, new generations of musicians, conductors and soloists have brought passion and expertise to audiences in the halls,
children at school and residents in the neighborhoods, from young to old and from all backgrounds. For 120 years, the Residentie Orkest has set the tone as a symphony orchestra locally, nationally and internationally.
The Residentie Orkest is celebrating its 120th anniversary with a new grand piano, a special Steinway-D.
General and artistic director Sven Arne Tepl on the choice of this instrument: “The Residentie Orkest had been looking for a new top-quality grand piano for some time. The type and condition of such an important instrument have a direct impact on the soloists of international standing we can and want to attract. A top soloist looks not only at the company and the hall, but especially at the quality of the grand piano. The moment you have a top instrument, you can really compete with other cities in Europe. For some time now, the Residentie Orkest has felt the urgency to find a new grand piano that fits perfectly into our concert hall.
Last season, several pianos were tried out. The instrument must be suitable for all styles, from classical solo to piano concertos by Mozart and Beethoven to newly written works. From transparent with many overtones to powerful with lows in the bass, a clear structured middle and a high that is round and radiant. We have tried a number of instruments that did not meet our requirements, and top instruments are rare. A few months ago we found a fantastic Steinway-D. The orchestra was able to purchase the grand piano with the help of a large bequest from a Friend of the orchestra as well as donations from visitors and patrons and our own contribution.”
